Basilica Julia lies along the south side of the Roman Forum, where low walls, column bases and marble paving mark the footprint of a major civic building. Julius Caesar began its construction and Augustus completed it. Rome’s civil courts once met here, with several hearings sometimes taking place at the same time. Look closely at the marble for board games scratched into the floor by people who passed the time while waiting. Visit early for a quieter walk among the remains.

A civic building in the Roman Forum

Basilica Julia stands along the south side of the Roman Forum, beside the Via Sacra. Julius Caesar commissioned the building, and Augustus completed it. It served as a major civic space, with Rome’s civil courts holding hearings inside.

Several tribunals could sit at once. The building also had galleries above the courts, where people could watch proceedings. Shops, offices and bankers occupied its edges, placing legal and commercial activity close together.

Reading the remains

The basilica’s low walls, platform, column bases, steps and marble paving outline the scale of the building. Its long, five-aisled interior is no longer intact, so the surviving foundations help you picture its former footprint.

Look down at the marble for board games scratched into the surface. These marks offer a small, tangible detail of everyday life in a building otherwise remembered for legal proceedings. A guide or audio tour can help explain the remains and their place in the Forum.
