Porto Antico is Genoa’s old harbour, now a waterfront area with promenades, museums, restaurants and family attractions. Walk along the port for views of the water and the colorful houses on the hills, or make time for the aquarium, the Biosphere and the interactive Children’s City museum. A marine museum with a submarine and a swimming pool add more options. The broad paths are suitable for strollers, and benches and palm trees make it easy to pause by the water.

From trading port to waterfront district

Porto Antico

Porto Antico means “old harbour.” For hundreds of years, the port was among Europe’s busiest and formed a center of commerce for Genoa, a city whose history is closely tied to the sea.

The area was renovated for the 1992 World Expo, marking the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. Architect Renzo Piano designed the redevelopment. Today, the former commercial center is a cultural and leisure district within Genoa’s port.

Broad promenades run along the waterfront, with palm trees and benches along the way. The paths are suitable for strollers, and the port’s mix of attractions makes it easy to combine a walk with a visit to a museum or a meal.

The Biosphere contains a miniature rainforest ecosystem, while Children’s City is an interactive museum. The aquarium is another major draw. A marine museum with a submarine and a swimming pool add further options for families. Restaurants and bars sit by the water, including spots where you can dine close to the sea.
