A farming landscape beneath the bog

Céide Fields

Céide Fields lies on an exposed stretch of County Mayo’s north coast, near Ballycastle. Beneath the blanket bog, archaeologists have found an extensive network of stone-walled fields, along with houses and megalithic tombs. The remains belong to a farming community that lived here around 5,000 years ago.

Peat cutting revealed the buried walls. The bog had covered the land and protected the remains from later farming, leaving a view of a prehistoric landscape that would otherwise have been difficult to read. The size of the field system makes the site a significant place to learn about early farming in Ireland.

Start at the interpretive centre

The interpretive centre introduces the archaeological discoveries and the people who lived on this land. Exhibits explain the site in accessible terms, and an audiovisual presentation gives another way to understand the fields and their setting. The centre’s glass-pyramid design looks out over the surrounding landscape.

The centre and the outdoor site work well together: first get a sense of what archaeologists uncovered, then look for the field system in the landscape. The 360-degree presentation can help you picture the site, but seeing the ground before watching it gives the images useful context.

Walking the site and coast

A guided walk helps explain what the stone remains reveal about the area’s early agricultural life. The raised boardwalk provides a vantage point over the site, while the wider setting includes blanket bog and a dramatic stretch of coastline. On a clear day, views extend across the bay; nearby cliffs offer another reason to spend time outdoors.

Céide Fields is a coastal archaeological site as well as a place to study ancient settlement. Plan to visit the centre and walk outside, and leave room for the surrounding views. The exposed setting is best appreciated when the weather is clear.
