City Palace

In Udaipur’s Old City, the City Palace combines a historic royal complex with a museum devoted to the Mewar dynasty. Inside, look for courtyards, carved balconies, colourful windows and rooms decorated with mirrors, tiles and paintings, alongside royal artefacts and collections. Lake Pichola comes into view from several points in the palace, adding a scenic pause to the museum visit. Set aside at least two to three hours to explore, and consider an audio guide or local guide to add context to the rooms and objects.

The palace museum

The main part of the City Palace is open as the City Palace Museum. Its rooms are decorated with mirrors, tiles and paintings, and hold a varied collection of artefacts and royal objects. The displays offer a way to explore the history of the Mewar dynasty through the palace and its collections.

Look closely at the carved balconies, colourful windows and detailed interiors as you move through the complex. Courtyards break up the visit, while views of Lake Pichola appear from different points along the way.

Planning your visit

The palace complex covers a substantial area, with stairs and plenty of walking between its spaces. Comfortable shoes will make it easier to explore. Plan for at least two to three hours if you want time for the museum, courtyards and lake viewpoints.

An audio guide or local guide can help explain the rooms and objects. Tickets are recommended in advance. For a less crowded visit, aim for early morning or after 4 PM.
