Alappuzha Light House

Alappuzha Lighthouse stands on the coast in Alappuzha, Kerala, a short walk from the beach.

Alappuzha Lighthouse stands on the coast in Alappuzha, Kerala, a short walk from the beach. Built in 1862, the red-and-white tower once guided ships using the town's busy port. From the top you can see the Arabian Sea, the shoreline, the town and, on a clear day, passing trains. A small museum near the ticket counter shows old lamps and lighthouse equipment. The climb is steep, so take the staircase at your own pace.

Alappuzha Lighthouse dates from 1862, when Alappuzha was one of the main ports in Kerala. Ships carried goods in and out of the town, and the tower helped them find their way along the coast.

The lighthouse sits close to the beach, about 100 metres from the sand. Nearby, the remains of the old Alappuzha Sea Bridge are still standing. The bridge once carried goods that came by ship, so it is a reminder of the port days.

The tower stands almost 30 metres tall. Its red-and-white stripes are the feature most visitors notice first from the road and the sand.

The climb is the main reason most people visit. The staircase is a narrow spiral with more than 100 steps. It is steep and can feel tiring on a warm day, so go slowly and keep a steady pace.

At the top is a platform open to the wind. From there the Arabian Sea stretches out on one side, the beach and the green town lie below, and on a clear day you can see trains moving in the distance. Visitors who have climbed at sunset describe the light as calmer and softer, which suits a slow look around the top.

The climb is not suitable for everyone. Visitors with knee pain are advised against it, and anyone nervous about heights may prefer to stay on the ground.

The museum, the lens and the grounds

A small museum sits near the ticket counter. It holds old lamps and maritime items that show how the light and the lighthouse worked.

The lens is the part many visitors find most interesting. If you ask, the staff on site can explain how the light was used.

The grounds are neat and quiet. On the beach to the north, a Children's Park offers a place for kids to play, though the beach has no water sports facilities.
