On the south bank of the Yamuna in Agra, the Taj Mahal is a white-marble mausoleum built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Its balanced design, fine marble inlay and carved details reward a slow look, while the formal gardens and reflecting pool frame the monument from different angles. The marble changes colour with the light, from the softer tones of dawn to warmer hues near sunset. You can also buy a separate ticket to enter the main mausoleum chamber.

Built in memory of Mumtaz Mahal

Taj Mahal

Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. Work began that year, and accounts in the supplied material place its completion between 1648 and 1653. The project drew thousands of artisans and workers. The mausoleum’s purpose is inseparable from its setting: a carefully ordered complex beside the Yamuna, centred on the tomb beneath the main dome.

Marble, symmetry and gardens

The pale marble exterior is known for its precise symmetry and detailed craftsmanship. Look closely at the carved surfaces and stone inlay, then step back to take in how the central building relates to its surrounding structures and gardens. The reflecting pool draws the eye along the garden axis toward the mausoleum. As daylight changes, the marble can appear softer at dawn and warmer toward sunset. The complex includes a mosque and a guest house as well as the gardens and reflecting pool. A separate ticket is needed to enter the main mausoleum chamber, so check the ticket options if seeing the interior is part of your plan.

Planning your visit

Early morning is suggested for cooler conditions and smaller crowds; sunset is another time to see the changing colour of the marble. Tickets are available online and at the site, and booking in advance is recommended to avoid ticket-counter queues. The monument is closed to tourists on Fridays, so plan your Agra itinerary around that closure. At the marble platform, remove your shoes or cover them to help keep the surface clean. If you want more historical detail, prepare beforehand or choose your guide carefully: the supplied material notes that on-site interpretation may be limited, and some guided visits include shopping stops. Agree on the route and any fees before you begin.
