Castle of Eger

Eger Castle sits on a hill above the center of Eger, a short walk from the main square.

Eger Castle sits on a hill above the center of Eger, a short walk from the main square. Its walls and museums tell the story of 1552, when a small Hungarian force led by István Dobó held off a far larger Ottoman army. Inside, the István Dobó Castle Museum fills a late 15th-century bishop's palace, while a dungeon, rock-cut casemates and waxworks of the siege's heroes and villains are also on the grounds. The walk along the ramparts gives wide views over the old town. Allow two to three hours for the exhibits and the grounds.

The 1552 siege

The castle occupies the hill above the town, and its walls have been rebuilt and extended over the centuries. In 1552, a small Hungarian garrison under István Dobó defended the fortress for several weeks against a much larger Ottoman army. The defense became one of the central episodes in Hungarian history, and Géza Gárdonyi later wrote a novel about it.

The Ottomans took the town in 1596, but the defense of 1552 is the episode the castle is best known for. For many people in Hungary, the site recalls the courage of the soldiers who fought there, so visitors should keep a respectful pace and tone while walking the grounds.

Inside the castle

The István Dobó Castle Museum is housed in the former Bishop's Palace, a building from the late 15th century. The Castle History Exhibition is on the first floor, where models, drawings and artifacts, including armor and Turkish uniforms, explain how the castle developed.

On the eastern side of the complex, the foundations of St John's Cathedral, dating to the 12th century, can still be seen. The casemates are cut from solid rock and are reached through the Dark Gate.

The lower gate is approached from Dobó Square, and a narrow pass leads to the inner gate. The Gergely Bastion, named after Gergely Bornemissza, stands in the middle of this pass. The dungeon holds an exhibition on punishment and execution in early Hungary, open during the summer.

The grounds also have an archery area, where you can pay to test your skill with old-fashioned bows, and a waxworks with lifelike figures of the heroes and villains of the siege.

Views and the walk up

Cobbled Vár köz climbs from Tinódi Sebestyén tér to the castle, and the narrow streets build a medieval mood on the way up. The ramp and the ramparts are a pleasant walk in warm weather.

From the walls you can take in the rooftops of the old town and the city beyond, and the views are among the best reasons to come. Allow time to walk the whole circuit of the walls rather than only the first viewpoint.

One evening option is a discounted evening ticket, which covers a stroll around the grounds once the museums have closed. The grounds are quieter at that point, with no crowds to navigate.

Visiting with children or mobility needs

Exhibits are labeled in English and Hungarian, and audio guides are available in several languages. The site has an assistive hearing loop.

Families can use the children's area, which has interactive panels, and a visit can run longer if children want time there.

The site offers wheelchair-accessible seating, restrooms and parking. The inclines and steps between the parts of the complex are still demanding, so plan rest breaks and allow extra time.
