Vörösmarty Square sits in Budapest’s 5th district, at the northern end of Váci Street. The pedestrian shopping street leads south through restaurants and shops, making the square a convenient stop between walks through the city centre.

At the square’s centre is a limestone monument to Mihály Vörösmarty, the Hungarian poet whose name it bears. Built in 1908, the statue stands on a limestone-block pedestal and is surrounded by figures representing different parts of Hungarian society. Vörösmarty is known for his poems, plays and patriotic lyrics.

During the holiday season, wooden stalls bring food, traditional sweets and handmade crafts to the square. Mulled wine, cinnamon and smoky cooking scents mingle with festive music as the lights come on. The market is a place to browse as well as eat, with Hungarian dishes and products among the stalls.

Prices at the seasonal stands can be higher than at ordinary bakeries and shops. A free little train ride for children runs at certain times; check locally for its schedule.

Gerbeaud Café and Váci Street

Gerbeaud Café faces the square and is known for cakes and pastries, including Dobos cake and Gerbeaud cake. Its confectionery business began in 1858 under Henrik Kugler and moved to the square in 1870. Émile Gerbeaud later helped develop the café and confectionery.

Váci Street begins here and runs south as a pedestrian shopping route. Shops, cafés and restaurants line the street, so you can continue browsing on foot after a stop at the square.
