Inside Buda Castle, the National Széchényi Library preserves Hungary’s written cultural heritage. Founded in 1802, it holds books, manuscripts, maps and other records, with displays that introduce the history of Hungarian documents. Temporary exhibitions add another reason to visit, and a small café on the main level serves coffee, snacks and sandwiches. The castle building and courtyard are also worth seeing from outside. Entry and access to library services have different requirements, so check which ticket or reader card you need before planning to study or work here.

Count Ferenc Széchényi founded the library in 1802. It is Hungary’s national library and preserves the country’s written cultural heritage. Its collections include rare manuscripts, books and maps, alongside magazines and newspapers.

The library has been housed in the southwest wing of Buda Castle since 1985. Its location places it among the castle complex’s museums and historic buildings.

The collections include Hungarian manuscripts and maps, as well as records of the country’s past. Special exhibitions provide a way to engage with selected material; one exhibition on Hungarian records has been described as brief and informative. Temporary displays are also held, so the exhibition content can change.

The library is primarily a place for research and reading. Staff can help locate or request books from storage, and the building also has a small café on its main level, serving refreshments, sandwiches, snacks and coffee.

Choosing the right kind of visit

A visit to the exhibition is different from using the library as a reader. Separate tickets or permissions may apply to services such as working with a laptop. If you intend to study or consult books, check which Reader card you need before arriving; a Visitor card may not provide the same access.

The library’s architecture and courtyard can also be appreciated from outside. If you are mainly interested in the building, consider whether you need an interior ticket. For a quieter experience inside, aim for a less crowded period.
