Kouros of Flerio

The Kouros of Flerio is an unfinished ancient marble statue in a garden near Melanes, on Naxos.

The Kouros of Flerio is an unfinished ancient marble statue in a garden near Melanes, on Naxos. A shaded path leads to the sculpture through leafy grounds, with weathered white marble from the island’s quarrying past around you. A second kouros lies farther uphill, where stairs and sun make the walk more demanding. Go for the statues and a glimpse of the old quarry landscape; refreshments, including local kitron, are also available at a garden café.

The kouros in its garden

Kouros of Flerio

The Kouros of Flerio lies in a garden near Melanes, among the rural landscapes and marble-rich ground of inland Naxos. A shaded path leads to the statue through dense greenery. The cool, leafy setting is a striking contrast to the pale, weathered marble around it.

Kouros means “young man” in Greek. These large sculptures were carved from Naxian marble in antiquity. The Flerio statue was left unfinished at the place where it was made, rather than being taken to its intended destination. Its unfinished state gives the site a direct connection to the island’s ancient stoneworking.

The second statue and the uphill walk

There is another kouros farther along the route, in the direction of the old quarry. The first statue is the easier stop: the walk to it is short and shaded. Reaching the second involves stairs and a more exposed uphill stretch, so sturdy footwear and water are useful, especially in summer. The extra effort brings a view toward the marble quarry.

The paths and statues are outdoors, with no museum-style displays described at the site. Signs can be limited, so pay attention as you approach and ask locally if you are unsure of the way. The drive follows winding mountain roads.

A café stop

A café in the garden serves refreshments, including kitron, a local lemon liqueur. It gives you a place to pause after the walk or before continuing toward the second statue. The site is in the Melanes area, away from Naxos Town, and can be combined with a walk in the surrounding village landscape.
