Stuttgart TV Tower, or Fernsehturm, is a landmark in Degerloch with observation decks and wide views across Stuttgart and the surrounding countryside. A quick elevator ride takes you up to look over the city, vineyards and Neckar Valley; on clear days, the view can reach the Black Forest and Swabian Alb. The tower was the first telecommunications tower built from reinforced concrete. After taking in the panorama, stop at the cafe for coffee or cake, or visit the restaurant for a meal with a view.

The Stuttgart TV Tower, known locally as Fernsehturm, opened in 1956. At 216.61 metres tall, it was the first television tower in the world built from reinforced concrete. Its design later became a model for similar towers.

The tower stands on Hoher Bopser, a hill in Stuttgart’s Degerloch district. It was built for telecommunications, but its observation decks also made it a city landmark and a place to see the surrounding region from above.

Views from the observation decks

A fast elevator carries you to the observation area, about 150 metres above the ground. The decks give you a broad view over Stuttgart, the Neckar Valley and nearby vineyards. When the air is clear, the panorama can extend to the Black Forest, the Swabian Alb and the Odenwald.

The highest deck is accessible by stairs only. The lower deck is another option for taking in the view. Both give you a high vantage point over the city and surrounding hills. Sunset is a popular time to see the light change across the landscape; clear weather helps if you hope to spot distant landmarks.

Cafe and restaurant

There is a cafe below the observation deck, where you can take a break over coffee or cake. Rhubarb cake is one item visitors have enjoyed there. The tower also has a restaurant, with views as part of the setting.

Prices at the restaurant can feel high, so bring snacks if you would rather not buy food there. The cafe is a convenient stop after the elevator ride, whether you want a drink or a slice of cake before heading back down.

Getting there and planning your visit

The tower is at Jahnstraße 120 in Stuttgart-Degerloch. A nearby U-Bahn station is within walking distance, including an uphill stretch. A visitor travelling by train reported using a zone 1 ticket to reach the tower, but check current local transport information before setting out.

Tickets can be bought for a visit to the observation decks, and advance booking is recommended. If you are travelling with a disability or a carer, check eligibility for any ticket-office discounts before buying online. The tower’s outdoor area and the elevator make the visit straightforward, though access to the highest deck involves stairs.
