Neues Schloss is an 18th-century palace on Schlossplatz, Stuttgart’s central square. Its broad Baroque and Rococo façade, sculpted figures and central courtyard give you plenty to look at from outside, while gardens and open public spaces surround the building. The palace was built as a royal residence for the rulers of Württemberg and now houses state government offices, so its richly decorated rooms are not routinely open. Check for a special tour or public opening if seeing the interior is a priority.
A palace built for Württemberg’s ruler

Construction began in 1746, when Duke Charles Eugene of Württemberg wanted a royal residence worthy of his position. Work continued until 1807, making the palace a long-running project. Its design drew on Baroque and Rococo styles, with the scale and formal appearance intended to rival Versailles.
The palace later served as a residence for the kings of Württemberg. It was almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt after the conflict. Today, state government offices occupy the building, which is why its interior is not normally open for casual visits.
What to see from Schlossplatz

The palace’s three-winged façade forms a prominent backdrop to Schlossplatz, Stuttgart’s largest central square. Look closely at the sculptural details, including figures of deer and lions; a stag statue crowns one of the buildings. The courtyard and fountain are also noted features of the palace grounds.
The square is a place to pause, take photographs and see public events or small markets when they are taking place. Gardens and green spaces around the palace give the area room to walk and sit. The adjacent Altes Schloss is an easy addition to a visit.
Seeing the interior
The palace’s decorated rooms are accessible only on special occasions or through specially arranged public tours. A public opening has taken place as part of the Night of Museums; check current arrangements with Stuttgart’s Tourist Information Office before setting out, as ordinary access is limited by the government offices inside.
If no tour is available, the exterior and surrounding square still make a straightforward stop in the city centre. Schlossplatz also works as a starting point for a self-guided walk, with cultural attractions close by.
