Main Tower is a 56-storey skyscraper in Frankfurt's Bankenviertel, the financial district, near the Main River. It is the only tower in the city with a public observation deck, so it gives the one clear view over the whole skyline. From the top you can see the surrounding skyscrapers, the old town, the river and the hills beyond the city. Go near sunset, when the light is warm on the glass towers and the city lights come on. The restaurant and bar sit a floor below the deck, so you can combine the view with a meal or a drink.

The view covers the whole city. Nearby, you can pick out the Commerzbank Tower, designed by Norman Foster, which is lit yellow in the evening. The Deutsche Bank twin towers and the Trianon are also in sight, along with the Messeturm and the other high-rises around them.

Looking the other way, you see the Main bridges and the Frankfurt Cathedral. On a clear day, the view extends to the hills of the Taunus, the Spessart and the Vogelsberg, and you can spot Frankfurt's airport. Descriptive panels help you identify the buildings you see.

Getting there and getting up

Main Tower is a short walk from the Museumsufer, the museum embankment. From the Museumsufer, cross the Untermainbrücke, the bridge just west of the Alte Brücke, and head north-west. The blue glass tower is visible from the bridge.

The lift is one of the fastest in Germany and takes you up in moments. The public platform at 200 metres is open daily, but it can close in bad weather. The restaurant and bar sit at about 187 metres, so you can order a drink with the view before or after your time on the deck.

The tower is good for children, and its entrance, restrooms and seating are wheelchair accessible. There is also an assistive hearing loop. Paid parking is available nearby.

If you plan to eat at the restaurant, international cuisine is served, and tables are best booked well in advance.
