St. Nicholas' Church Museum

St.

St. Nicholas' Church Museum is in Berlin’s Nikolaiviertel and traces the story of the church and the surrounding area. Its collection brings together church objects, historical coins and tokens, and contemporary art. Exhibitions also cover Berlin around the fall of the Wall, including documentary films about 1989 and 1990. Climb to the second floor for a close look at the organ and a view across the nave; you can also listen to classical music there. Allow time to read the displays, as some audio-guide numbers may be missing.

Church history and collections

The museum is housed in St. Nicholas Church in Berlin’s historic Nikolaiviertel. The church dates to the medieval period and was badly damaged during the Second World War before being reconstructed. Its history and that of the surrounding area are central to the museum’s displays.

Inside, you can see church objects from different periods alongside a collection of coins and tokens. The exhibits also include contemporary art, bringing newer work into a historic setting.

Exhibitions and the upper floor

An exhibition about 1989 and 1990 uses documentary films to explore the period when the Berlin Wall came down. The films include footage of former East German border police dismantling passport-control booths at Friedrichstraße station.

Stairs lead to the upper floor, where you can get close to the organ and look down across the nave. Headphones are available there for listening to classical music. If you use the audio guide, some of its numbered entries may not be available, so the written descriptions are a useful way to follow the displays.
