Spreepark

Spreepark is a former amusement park in Plänterwald, in Berlin’s Treptow-Köpenick district.

Spreepark is a former amusement park in Plänterwald, in Berlin’s Treptow-Köpenick district. It opened in 1969 as Kulturpark Plänterwald, the German Democratic Republic’s only amusement park, and closed in 2002. Its overgrown paths and surviving ride structures draw people interested in the site’s unusual history and changing landscape. What you can see inside depends on access: the grounds are guarded, and entry is not permitted without authorization. Weekend guided tours have been available, while the perimeter paths provide views of the park from outside.

From Kulturpark to abandoned amusement park

Spreepark opened in 1969 in Plänterwald as Kulturpark Plänterwald. It was the German Democratic Republic’s only amusement park, and its Ferris wheel became a landmark visible across the area. The park drew large crowds before its fortunes declined after German reunification.

The site closed in 2002. Its rides and themed structures were left behind, and plants spread through parts of the grounds. The abandoned park became known for its mix of amusement-park remnants and woodland, though the attractions have since been dismantled or changed. Accounts of what remains differ, so a visit should not be planned around seeing a particular ride or structure.

Access and what you may see

Spreepark is a guarded site, not an open public park. Do not cross the perimeter or attempt to enter without permission. Weekend guided tours have been available, giving participants access to the grounds and an explanation of the park’s history and plans for its future. Tour access and what is visible can change, so check the official website before making the trip.

From outside the fence, you can walk around the perimeter and look for views of the site. The Ferris wheel and other former attractions have been visible from some points, but accounts differ about which structures remain. Allow about 70 minutes if you book a guided tour; a perimeter walk has no fixed duration.
