The Bröhan Museum is a state museum in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, opposite Charlottenburg Palace.

The Bröhan Museum is a state museum in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, opposite Charlottenburg Palace. Its collection follows Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism through furniture, glass, ceramics, paintings and other decorative arts. Look for furnished room displays, examples of Berlin Secession art and changing exhibitions that connect design with its historical context. The museum is compact, so you can see the collection without setting aside a full day. It is a useful stop if you are visiting the palace and want to explore design from the late 19th century onward.

A museum in the Charlottenburg Palace ensemble

The Bröhan Museum occupies rooms in the Charlottenburg Palace complex, directly opposite the palace. The building was originally constructed for a guard regiment. The museum opened in its present location in 1983 and became a state museum in 1994.

Its collection began with entrepreneur and art collector Karl H. Bröhan. He gave it to the state of Berlin on his 60th birthday. The museum now focuses on Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism, with works from the Berlin Secession and changing exhibitions that range across fine art, applied art and design.

Furniture, glass and changing displays

The collection brings together furniture, glassware, ceramics, posters and paintings. Furnished room displays let you see decorative objects as part of an interior, while the broader collection traces changes in European design from the late 19th century into the postwar period. The range includes objects from different countries, so the galleries show more than one national approach to these styles.

Look for the furniture ensemble by Alfred Grenander, porcelain figures by Agathon Léonard and Willy Jaecke’s painting *Im romanischen Café*. Changing exhibitions add other subjects and periods. Past displays have included work on Jugendstil and design for children; check what is showing during your visit. Some exhibits place artworks in wider historical contexts, including discussions of colonialism and the representation of women.
