Halle Saint-Pierre

At the foot of Montmartre, Halle Saint-Pierre brings together art exhibitions, a bookshop and a café in a former covered market at 2 Rue Ronsard.

At the foot of Montmartre, Halle Saint-Pierre brings together art exhibitions, a bookshop and a café in a former covered market at 2 Rue Ronsard. Its ironwork and high ceilings give the building a character of their own, while the exhibitions focus on art brut, outsider, folk and naïve art. Browse the arts books, then stop for coffee in the café. The exhibition spaces are on different floors, so allow time to explore both; Sacré-Cœur is within walking distance.

A market hall turned arts centre

Halle Saint-Pierre stands at the foot of Montmartre in a former covered market designed in the Baltard style. The building later housed a school. Its iron structure, tall ceilings and decorative pillars are part of the visit, even before you enter the exhibition spaces.

The centre brings together a museum, gallery, auditorium, bookshop and café. Its programme centres on art brut and outsider art, with exhibitions also devoted to folk and naïve art. Temporary shows change over time, so check what is on before planning your visit.

What to see inside

Exhibitions occupy galleries on different floors, giving you several spaces to explore. The displays can include unconventional art and design, and the programme has covered a range of artistic disciplines. A small permanent collection includes paintings, works on paper, marquetry, textiles and glass; the permanent collection also includes works by Max Fourny.

Halle Saint-Pierre holds three or four temporary exhibitions a year, according to the supplied programme information. Past exhibitions have included Gilbert Peyre’s machine-sculptures, made with recycled objects and high technology. That exhibition ran from September 15 to December 15, 2024, so it is no longer current.

Bookshop and café

The arts bookshop stocks books on art and literature, making it a useful stop even if you are not visiting an exhibition. The café sits within the centre and has a library nearby. You can come in for a drink, browse, or take a break between the galleries.

The bookshop and café do not require an exhibition ticket. Drinks mentioned at the café include coffee, an allongé and a cappuccino. Sacré-Cœur is within walking distance, so the centre can fit into a visit to Montmartre.
