Its interior is known for medieval wall paintings, including scenes of the afterlife, some of which were covered over during the Reformation. The Guild Chapel was founded in 1269 by the Guild of the Holy Cross, a medieval religious organisation that also provided schooling and support for the poor. The chapel grew over time. Its current chancel dates to the 13th century, while the nave and tower were rebuilt around 1490.

The Guild’s buildings included a schoolhouse and almshouses. The chapel stands beside Shakespeare’s Schoolroom and Guildhall, placing it among buildings connected to the town’s medieval civic and religious life.

Paintings covered by royal order

The chapel’s wall paintings were commissioned in the early 1500s by Hugh Clopton, a local benefactor who served as Lord Mayor of London. Their scenes include depictions of the afterlife. In 1559, an order issued under Elizabeth I called for signs of superstition and idolatry to be removed from places of worship. The paintings were covered with whitewash.

John Shakespeare, William Shakespeare’s father, was the town’s Chamberlain and recorded the covering of the paintings in the town accounts. The work took place less than 70 years after the paintings had been applied. Some paintings remain concealed behind wall panels, while others can be seen inside the chapel.

What to look for inside

Take time to look closely at the surviving medieval paintings and notice the scenes that give the chapel its distinctive interior. A timeline near the entrance provides more detail about the building, and an information sheet inside explains its history in multiple languages.

Volunteer guides may be available to discuss the chapel and its artwork. Services are held on Wednesday mornings and on the first Saturday of the month, giving those visits a different character from a brief look around.
