Victoria Park, known locally as Vicky Park, is a large public park in East London, with entrances around the Tower Hamlets and Hackney area. Opened in 1845, it has lakes, canals, gardens, open lawns and a Chinese Pagoda. You can walk or cycle the paths, watch waterbirds, play sport or settle in for a picnic. Families can head for the playgrounds, including a summer splash area, while the Pavilion Café sits beside the lake. Weekend markets bring food stalls and a livelier feel to parts of the park.

A public park for the East End

Victoria Park opened in 1845 as a public green space for the growing East End. It was created for local working people, and became a municipal park in 1887. The park is also known as Vicky Park and the People’s Park.

Its scale leaves room for formal gardens, open grassland, wilder corners, sports facilities and paths beside water. The grounds are divided by Bonner Road, so it helps to have a particular destination in mind if you are visiting for a short time.

Lakes, gardens and landmarks

The park has two boating lakes, including a lake for model boats, as well as ponds and canals. The Chinese Pagoda is one of its best-known landmarks, and a bandstand, decorative gardens, bridges and historic features add interest along the paths. The Old English Garden is near the lake and playground area.

Waterbirds gather around the ponds, where you may see swans, geese and moorhens. Squirrels also live in the park. If you want a waterside stop, the Pavilion Café is beside the lake. The park’s paths and open lawns also suit a longer walk, a run or a picnic.

Play, sport and weekend visits

Families can choose between playgrounds on different sides of the park. The V&A play area has a sand pit and suits younger children; the larger playground has long slides and climbing equipment for older children. The Hub Playground’s fountain is a seasonal draw, so it is a good spot to check out in summer.

Sports facilities include tennis courts, football and cricket grounds, a running track and a skate park. You can also cycle, jog or simply sit on the grass. Weekend markets bring food stalls to the park, alongside community events and summer music festivals. Event days can change the feel of a visit, so choose a quieter weekday if you want a calmer walk.
