St Bride's Church

St Bride’s Church stands on Fleet Street in the City of London, with a history reaching back to Roman times.

St Bride’s Church stands on Fleet Street in the City of London, with a history reaching back to Roman times. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt it after the Great Fire of 1666, and its distinctive tiered spire is said to have inspired the design of the wedding cake. Look around the church for its chessboard floor, colourful altar and memorial to journalists killed in conflicts, then go down to the crypt museum to see remains and exhibits tracing the site’s past.

A church rebuilt after the Great Fire

The site has served as a place of worship since the early history of London, with Roman-era origins represented in the crypt exhibition. The church has been rebuilt and altered over the centuries. The present church was designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of 1666, and its history includes eight incarnations.

St Bride’s also has a long connection with printing. England’s first mechanical printing press was set up here in the 1500s, and the church later became associated with the newspaper industry on Fleet Street. A memorial inside honours journalists killed in conflicts around the world.

The spire and the church interior

Wren’s stepped spire is the church’s most distinctive exterior detail. It is commonly linked to the tiered wedding cake: the story says a local baker took inspiration from its shape in the early 18th century. The church was badly damaged during the Blitz in 1940 and later restored.

Inside, look for the chessboard floor, colourful altar and pews sponsored by individuals or groups. The interior combines historic details with more recent features. The crypt museum adds another layer to a visit, with stonework from medieval and Roman periods and exhibits about the church and the surrounding Fleet Street area.
