Highgate Wood is an ancient woodland in North London, at Muswell Hill Road. Its shaded paths and varied trees make it a welcome change of pace from the city, with wildlife to look out for as you walk. In spring, bluebells add colour to the woodland; please admire them from the paths and keep out of protected areas. Families can use the playgrounds, while open grass provides space for picnics and outdoor games. A cafe and toilets are also available within the wood.

An ancient woodland in North London

Highgate Wood covers 28 hectares and was once part of the Ancient Forest of Middlesex, which extended across areas now known as London, Hertfordshire and Essex. Today it is one of four ancient woods in the London Borough of Haringey, alongside Queen’s Wood, Coldfall Wood and Bluebell Wood.

The woodland has a range of tree and shrub species. Its paths offer a way to explore beneath the canopy, with foxes, grey squirrels, birds, bats, butterflies and spiders among the wildlife recorded here. Take care around plants and animals, and leave the woodland as you found it.

Bluebells and woodland wildlife

Spring brings bluebells to parts of the wood. They are delicate, so keep to the paths and respect any fenced areas intended to protect them. Staying on the trail lets you enjoy the flowers without trampling them.

There is plenty to look for beyond the seasonal blooms. Watch and listen as you walk, but give wildlife space. The tree cover also makes the wood a shaded place to spend time outdoors on sunnier days.

Play, sport and time outdoors

Highgate Wood has facilities for families and for active visits. Children can use the playground, which includes climbing equipment and a zip wire; separate play areas cater to younger and older children. The wood also has sporting fields, including space for football and cricket, and facilities for tennis and other outdoor activities.

Open grass gives you room for a picnic or outdoor games, while the wooded paths suit a walk, run or cycle. Toilets and a cafe are available on site, so you can take a break without leaving the area.
