A civic seat since the 12th century

Guildhall has been the seat of the City of London Corporation since the 12th century. The Corporation is one of the UK’s oldest legal entities, and the building remains in use for civic and state banquets. Its role in city government continues alongside its historic spaces, so access for visitors depends on when the building is open.

The Great Hall and its history

The Great Hall is one of Guildhall’s central spaces. It was the setting for the trial of Lady Jane Grey, who was known as the Nine Days Queen, as well as other medieval trials. The hall was restored after both the Great Fire and the Blitz. Monuments inside commemorate figures including Mayor William Beckford, Wellington, Nelson and Churchill.

Below ground: crypt and amphitheatre

The remains of a Roman amphitheatre lie beneath Guildhall, alongside a medieval crypt. Both can be visited as part of a free visit to the site. Basement lockers are available for bags, and guided tours or conversations with staff can add context to what you see.
