Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

The Estorick Collection is a small museum of modern Italian art in a Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse at 39A Canonbury Square, Islington.

The Estorick Collection is a small museum of modern Italian art in a Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse at 39A Canonbury Square, Islington. Its collection spans the late 19th century to the 1950s, with works connected to Futurism alongside figurative art and sculpture. Six galleries keep the visit focused, and rotating displays bring different works into view. After exploring, stop at the café for Italian-style refreshments or browse the bookshop. The museum is near Highbury & Islington station.

A collection shaped by Italian modernism

The museum grew from the collection of Eric Estorick, a writer and sociologist who became interested in Italian modernism after encountering Umberto Boccioni’s book Futurist Painting and Sculpture during a honeymoon in Switzerland in 1947. Over the next four decades, he collected works by Italian artists including Balla and Amedeo Modigliani.

The collection is known for its Futurist works, but it also includes figurative art and sculpture. Together, the works cover a period from the late 19th century through the 1950s.

A compact visit in a Georgian house

The collection is displayed across six galleries in a Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse. Works are rotated, so not everything in the collection is on view at once. Changing exhibitions add another reason to check the programme before visiting.

Exhibition labels give detailed context for the art. The small scale makes it possible to take in a concentrated selection without committing to a large museum visit. The building has multiple levels, so moving between galleries may involve stairs.

Café and bookshop

The café serves Italian-style refreshments and has seating indoors and in the courtyard garden. It is a place to pause before or after the galleries. The bookshop stocks art-related books and other items; its prices have been noted as low.
