Battersea Park

Battersea Park is a Victorian riverside park on the south bank of the Thames, between Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge.

Battersea Park is a Victorian riverside park on the south bank of the Thames, between Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge. Its paths link a boating lake, gardens, sports facilities and open lawns, with the London Peace Pagoda and Pump House Gallery among the landmarks. Look for swans and ducks by the water, or take a walk along the river promenade. Families can visit the small children’s zoo and playgrounds; cafés provide a place to pause. There is room here for a quiet stroll, a picnic or a longer day outdoors.

A Victorian park by the Thames

Battersea Park occupies the south bank of the Thames opposite Chelsea. The park was built between 1854 and 1870 on marshland reclaimed from the river, as well as land previously used for farming. It has been open to the public since 1858.

The river promenade runs between Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge. A walk here combines views over the Thames with glimpses into the park’s lawns and gardens. Paths also pass mature trees, planted areas and sculptures, so you can make a riverside stroll part of a wider circuit.

The lake, gardens and landmarks

The boating lake is one of the park’s main draws. Swans and ducks are often seen on the water, and the surrounding paths make it easy to stop and watch. Rowing boats and pedalos are available to hire in spring and summer. The park also has a model boating lake, fountains and a bandstand.

The London Peace Pagoda stands beside the river. The Buddhist monument was given to the park by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order in 1984. Nearby gardens include the Old English Garden, the Festival Gardens and the Sub Tropical Garden. The park also has a rose garden and an arboretum.

The Pump House Gallery is housed in a restored Grade II-listed building that once supplied water to the lakes. Its exhibitions focus on contemporary art. Check its current programme before visiting if you are planning your day around the gallery.

Family activities and sport

Families can visit Battersea Children’s Zoo, a small zoo designed for children, and use the park’s playgrounds. Other activities include tennis, cycling and jogging on the paths. The park has sports facilities, cafés, public toilets and picnic areas, so you can build a visit around time outdoors without needing to leave the grounds for a break.

For a relaxed visit, combine the lake with a garden and the riverside path. If you are taking children, allow time for the playground or zoo; if you are there to exercise, the promenade provides a route with views of the river. Concerts and other events also take place in the park, so check for scheduled activities when choosing a date.
