Arnolfini is a contemporary arts centre in Bush House on Bristol’s Harbourside, with changing exhibitions, performances, film and music in a converted tea warehouse. Entry to the galleries is free, and the programme ranges from local artists to work from around the world. Look around the bookshop for independent magazines and arts publications, then take a break at the café-bar, with seating by the water. The exhibitions change, so check what is on before you go; the building also has a Reading Room and spaces for events.

Arnolfini is Bristol’s international centre for contemporary arts, inside a converted tea warehouse at Narrow Quay. The building dates to the 19th century and is Grade II listed. Its position beside the harbour puts the galleries, bookshop and café-bar directly on the city’s waterfront.

The centre was established in 1961. Its programme has included artists from Bristol and elsewhere, with work spanning visual art, performance, dance, film and music. Exhibitions rotate, and the galleries often focus on contemporary artists who are less established. That means each visit depends on what is showing at the time, rather than on a permanent collection.

Exhibitions and events

The arts programme extends beyond gallery displays. Arnolfini has spaces for performances and screenings, as well as talks, workshops and other events. Check the current schedule before your visit if you have a particular exhibition or event in mind; the programme changes, and occasional floor closures can affect what is open.

Families have exhibition guides with activities to use in the galleries, and a free Art Cart provides creative materials for children. The centre also runs family activities during the year, including workshops and screenings. These are useful ways to approach the exhibitions together, especially for younger visitors.

The bookshop, Reading Room and café-bar

The bookshop specialises in arts publications and carries independent magazines, making it a good stop even if you have only a short time between exhibitions. There is also a Reading Room with space to sit quietly. Lockers downstairs let you leave bags while you look around.

The café-bar is an easy place to pause for coffee or a drink after the galleries. Bristol Beer Factory manages the bar, and outdoor seating looks across the harbour. On warm days, the waterside tables can be busy, so the indoor café-bar is an alternative if you cannot find a spot outside.

Planning a visit

Gallery entry is free, and the building has wheelchair-accessible access, seating and toilets. Arnolfini is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday, but check its website for current exhibition details and event information before setting out.

For a calmer look around, choose a weekday during term time; school holidays can bring more noise in the galleries. You can make the visit brief or spend longer exploring the exhibitions, bookshop and Reading Room. If the weather is good, leave time to sit by the water before continuing around the Harbourside.
