The Barber Institute of Fine Arts is an art gallery and concert venue on the University of Birmingham campus in Edgbaston, about 3 miles south of the city centre. Admission to the galleries is free, and the collection spans European art from the 13th to the 20th century. Look for paintings by Botticelli, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas and Picasso, alongside sculpture, prints and a notable collection of coins. The 1930s Art Deco building and its quiet galleries make this a good stop if you want time with the art away from the city centre.

The Barber Institute of Fine Arts is on the University of Birmingham campus in Edgbaston, around 3 miles south of the city centre. Lady Barber founded the institute in 1932. Its purpose-built Art Deco building was designed by Robert Atkinson and opened by Queen Mary in 1939.

Inside, a central music auditorium connects to corridors leading to the gallery rooms. The building is part of the visit: its architecture gives the galleries a distinct setting, while the auditorium links the institute’s art collection with its concert programme.

The collection covers the 13th to the 20th century, with paintings by artists including Botticelli, Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Turner, Manet, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso and Magritte. You can also see works by Rubens, Renoir, Rembrandt and Rossetti. The collection is compact enough to explore at a measured pace, with paintings alongside prints, drawings and sculpture, including work by Henry Moore.

The Barber also holds a large coin collection, with more than 16,000 objects in its archives. Byzantine and Roman coins are among its strengths. Temporary exhibitions add another reason to check what is on before you go; the displays change over time.

Concerts, talks and family activities

The institute is also a venue for performances. A weekly lunchtime concert is scheduled for Fridays at 1pm, with occasional evening concerts. Free lunchtime tours and talks are also part of the programme. Check the current events calendar if you want to plan around a performance or a guided visit.

Family activities and art classes are among the events offered, and some concerts and activities are open to the public. These give families and visitors with a particular interest in art more ways to spend time at the institute beyond the permanent galleries.
