The Cuban galleries bring together work from the colonial period through later developments in Cuban art. Paintings, sculpture and prints show a range of subjects and styles. Religious images and portraits sit alongside landscapes, abstraction and modern works, giving the collection a broad view of the island’s visual culture.

The collection is arranged chronologically, beginning on the third floor and continuing down. This layout lets you follow changes in Cuban art over time, from colonial-era works through the neo-colonial and post-revolutionary periods.

Look for Guillermo Collazo, whose work is associated with early Cuban art, and Rafael Blanco’s cartoon-like paintings and sketches. Raúl Martínez is known for his pop-art work from the 1960s, while Wifredo Lam’s paintings bring a distinctive modernist approach. Works by Amelia Peláez and René Portocarrero are also represented.

Plan for Spanish-language descriptions

Gallery descriptions are in Spanish. A translation app can help you read the text, while a guide can explain the artists and works as you move through the rooms. Set aside at least three hours if you want to cover the floors and galleries at a measured pace.

The museum lists an admission fee, but no amount is provided here. Its online schedule may not match current access, so confirm before travelling. If you also want to see international art, allow time to walk to the other building rather than assuming it is part of the same visit.
