A temple shaped by imperial ceremonies

Wanshou Temple

Wanshou Temple was built during the Ming dynasty by the Shenzong Emperor to celebrate his mother’s birthday. It later became a venue for imperial birthday ceremonies. During the Qing dynasty, the Qianlong Emperor celebrated his mother’s birthday there three times and ordered the compound expanded, using architectural elements from the Old Summer Palace.

The temple changed through successive periods of rebuilding and expansion. Its name has also been linked with the Summer Palace’s Longevity Hill. Today, the compound brings together the monastery, palace and garden elements described in accounts of its history.

There are English signs at some building entrances, with brief information about each space. Worshippers make offerings at the temple, and red placards bearing written blessings hang along the fence. Treat the religious spaces with care as you explore.
