St. Joseph’s Church is also known as Wangfujing Church and the East Cathedral, or Dongtang. The church site dates to 1655, when Jesuit missionaries established a church there. The site has seen destruction and rebuilding over the centuries. The present building was reconstructed in 1904.

Its location on Wangfujing Avenue puts the church beside one of Beijing’s major shopping streets. The broad square in front is used as a meeting place and a spot to sit. In the evening, the illuminated church gives the square a different character from the busy retail street nearby.
