A church built as Vancouver grew

Christ Church Cathedral began as an Anglican church in Vancouver’s early years. Work started with the basement in 1889; the building was dedicated in 1895 and became a cathedral in 1929. Its Gothic Revival design recalls English church architecture, while the structure uses Douglas fir and other local materials beneath its stone exterior.

The cathedral has undergone major renovations, including work in 1909 and 1995. Its original wooden flooring, tongue-and-groove ceiling and stained glass were restored in 2004. The building remains a distinctive older structure among downtown Vancouver’s glass towers.

Inside, look up at the wooden roof structure and the pattern of arches. The ceiling is supported by hammer-beam trusses, a form associated with large English halls and churches. Carved wooden furnishings and the organ add to the detail of the interior, so it is worth taking a moment to look around rather than heading straight back outside.

The cathedral’s 32 stained-glass windows depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Some place those stories in a Vancouver setting: one window shows St. Nicholas with the Lions Gate Bridge. The windows combine religious subjects with recognizable local landmarks, giving you details to look for throughout the church.

A place for services and music

Christ Church Cathedral is an active Anglican church as well as a venue for musical performances. Its program has included classical concerts, jazz and candlelight tribute shows. The church’s acoustics and timber interior provide a different setting from a conventional concert hall.

Events can draw different audiences and seating positions can affect how a performance sounds. Check the cathedral’s program before visiting for a concert, and arrive early if you want time to find your seat. For a quieter look at the architecture, a weekday daytime visit is a separate option; weekday entry is free.
