The estate and its house

Milner Gardens & Woodland occupies a historic estate in Qualicum Beach, managed by Vancouver Island University. The house was commissioned by General Noel Money for his sister, Hilda Bayley, and his mother, Emily Louisa Money. Designed with elements of a Ceylonese tea plantation house, it was built in 1931. The family’s time there was brief: Hilda and Emily stayed for about a year before the estate was sold to Ray Milner and his first wife, Rina, in 1937.

The Milners cared for the garden and old forest. Today, the house and grounds bring together the estate’s domestic history and its woodland setting. Volunteers can share information about the property as you explore.

Paths through woodland and gardens

Winding paths lead through gardens and stands of Douglas fir and red cedar, with flowers including rhododendrons and cyclamen. The mix of cultivated beds and older forest makes the walk varied: one stretch follows flower-lined lanes, another passes beneath large trees. There are also fruit trees, a reflecting pool and areas known as Grandma’s Garden.

The estate’s position on a bluff above the Strait of Georgia opens up views toward the water and surrounding islands. Keep an eye out for birds as you walk. The grounds include natural and landscaped areas, so allow time to pause along the way rather than treating the visit as a quick loop.

Tea in the Milner House

The house tea room gives you a chance to sit down after exploring the grounds. Tea is served with baked scones, cream and jam; cakes are also available. The menu can be limited, so choose it for tea and a light snack rather than a full meal. Seafood chowder has been described as spicy, so select another option if you prefer a milder soup.

The room’s china and the house setting make the tea stop part of the visit, not just a place to refuel. Check the current menu before you go if you have a particular dish in mind.

Seasonal displays and getting around

Christmas lights are a seasonal highlight, and the estate also holds events including a Halloween scarecrow display, an Easter Bunny Trail and a summer fairy event. Event dates and arrangements can change, so check the garden’s website before planning around one.

Some paths involve walking through woodland and garden terrain. Tram rides may help families with small children and people who find walking difficult. Parking can be scarce during busy events; arriving early is especially useful if you need an accessible parking space. The site has an accessible entrance, parking, restroom and seating.
