The CN Tower rises above downtown Toronto, with observation levels looking out over the city and Lake Ontario. From the Main Observation Level, floor-to-ceiling windows frame a 360-degree panorama; the glass floor gives you a direct view down to the streets. For a higher vantage point, The Top sits 447 metres above the ground. You can also dine at the revolving 360 Restaurant or, for an outdoor thrill, book the EdgeWalk. Sunset is a rewarding time to visit, but reserve ahead if you want a particular time slot.

A tower built for communications

CN Tower

The CN Tower was built in downtown Toronto as the city’s skyline grew and tall buildings began to interfere with radio and television signals. Canadian National Railway commissioned the communications tower, which was completed in 1976. Its height helped carry broadcast signals above the surrounding buildings.

At 553 metres, the tower remains a defining feature of Toronto’s skyline. Its role as a communications structure continues alongside its observation decks and visitor attractions. Look for archive material about its construction inside the tower for context on the engineering behind the landmark.

Views from the observation levels

A glass-fronted elevator takes visitors up to the Main Observation Level, 346 metres above the ground. Wraparound windows give you views across Toronto and Lake Ontario, with the Toronto Islands visible offshore. On clear days, distant Niagara Falls may also be in view.

The lower observation level is at 342 metres and includes the glass floor. Looking through it gives you a view of the streets far below. There is also an outdoor terrace, where a metal screen separates visitors from the open air. The different viewing areas provide several ways to take in the skyline, whether you want to photograph the city or pause by the windows.

The Top, at 447 metres, is a separate, higher viewing point. It is a smaller space than the Main Observation Level, with the view as its main focus. Take your time there before heading down, since you cannot return to The Top once you leave it.

Dining and outdoor experiences

The 360 Restaurant revolves around the tower, completing a turn in about 90 minutes. A reservation can include access to the main observation levels, so check the booking details when planning your visit. The restaurant gives you a changing view of the city over a meal.

For an outdoor activity, the EdgeWalk takes participants along the tower’s exterior ledge while secured by a harness. It is a seasonal experience and is best suited to visitors comfortable with heights. The glass floor and observation levels offer a less exposed way to see the drop below.

The tower is near Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, so the two attractions can be combined in one outing. If the sunset view is important to your plans, book ahead: popular time slots can sell out.
