In Curitiba’s Centro Cívico, the Museu Oscar Niemeyer pairs art exhibitions with architecture by the Brazilian architect it is named for. Its eye-shaped annex, known locally as the Eye Museum, rises above a yellow support beside a reflecting pool. Inside, exhibitions span visual arts, design and architecture, with Brazilian and international work and displays on Oscar Niemeyer. Allow two to three hours to see the galleries at an unhurried pace. The museum also has a shop, café and outdoor grounds for a quieter pause.

The Eye and the museum buildings

The museum is made up of two buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The annex is the one that gives the institution its familiar nickname, the Eye Museum: its distinctive eye-like form sits above a large yellow pillar beside a reflecting pool. The architecture is a major part of a visit, and the Eye is also used for exhibitions.

The original structure dates to 1967. The museum opened to the public in 2002, first under the name Novo Museu, or New Museum, and was later named for Niemeyer. Its spaces bring architecture and art together, with exhibitions spread across the two buildings.

Art, design and Niemeyer’s work

Exhibitions focus on visual art, architecture and design, with works by artists from Brazil and abroad. The programme changes, so what is on view depends on your dates. Past displays have included African and Asian collections, modern art, photography, paintings and sculpture. Some exhibitions are temporary; the museum also has displays devoted to Niemeyer.

In the Eye annex, look for photographs that document the museum’s construction. A presentation about Niemeyer provides another way to explore his work beyond the building itself. The museum also holds work connected with Paraná’s artists and exhibits material related to the architect’s projects, including images of buildings he designed around the world.

Planning time for your visit

Set aside two to three hours if you want to browse several exhibitions without rushing. The museum is closed on Mondays and open from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is free on Wednesdays, though free-entry days can bring long waits at the entrance. Check the museum’s website for current exhibition details and ticket information before setting out.

The museum has a café and an art shop, and its grounds include open areas where you can pause between galleries. If the Eye is a priority, check which exhibitions are currently installed there; the annex is part of the museum’s changing programme, not only an architectural stop.
