Em resumo

Stay in the center of Zell am See for a first trip by train, because the station, a lido and the Schmittenhöhe lift are all in town. Choose Kaprun if the Kitzsteinhorn and the reservoirs drive the trip, and Thumersbach or Schüttdorf for quieter lake evenings. Ask every hotel whether it issues the Summer Card, which cannot be bought separately.

How to choose a base in Zell am See

Zell am See and Kaprun sit a short drive apart and share one tourism board, one regional card system and one set of mountain lifts, but they are different places to sleep. Zell am See is a lake town with a station in its center. Kaprun is a valley village at the foot of the road to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the high mountain reservoirs. The Zell am See travel guide explains the setting, and this page settles where to put the bed. For the wider trip, start with the Austria guide.

Three questions decide most choices. How do you arrive? A train arrival makes the center easy, because the tourism site describes the station as directly in the town center, with hotels and restaurants within walking distance. What will fill your days: the lake or the lifts? And is your hotel a Summer Card partner, which changes what the lifts cost between 15 May and 31 October?

Prices in this guide are relative bands: $ is a simple guesthouse or apartment, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ a lakefront or boutique stay. Real rates swing with the calendar and are not quoted here. Check the final total at booking, including breakfast, parking and the local taxes that hotels add per night, which are covered below.

The center is the practical default. The station sits in town, the lido on the lake is a short walk, and the Schmittenhöhe lifts leave from Zell itself. The tourism board lists the 1,965 m Schmittenhöhe as the town's own mountain, with a view over Lake Zell and up to 30 peaks above 3,000 meters, so a half day on top needs no car and no transfer. Restaurants, ice cream stands and the promenade are all within a few minutes, which suits a short stay where you want to arrive, drop the bag and walk.

The trade-offs are crowds and noise. July and August fill the lanes near the water, and rooms facing a busy street can be loud on warm nights. Ask for an upper floor or a courtyard side if you sleep lightly. Parking in a lake town is rarely generous, and the tourism site has a separate parking page, so ask your hotel what it provides before you drive in.

Property types are mainly mid-range hotels, guesthouses and apartments, with a handful of larger lakefront hotels. Check whether your hotel is on the Summer Card partner list. In the center the answer varies from one house to the next, and it matters because the card pays for lifts, the lido and the panorama boat.

Evite se you want the glacier lifts at the door or a very quiet street at night. Kaprun or Thumersbach fits better.

Thumersbach is the quieter shore across from the town, and the tourism board lists a lido there among the three lidos on Lake Zell. It suits travelers whose days revolve around the water: an early swim, a long breakfast with a lake view and an evening that ends early. From here the town and its restaurants are a short ride away rather than a stroll, so the base works best for people who already have a plan for the day and a way of getting around.

Expect to rely on buses or a bike for the center and the station. That is easy with a Guest Mobility Ticket, which the tourism site says overnight guests receive for public transport across the federal state of Salzburg, but it adds a step to every errand. If you arrive by train with heavy luggage, check the transfer from the station before you commit.

Thumersbach is a poor match for short stays built on trains and evening dining in town, and a good match for four nights or more, when a slow rhythm is the point. The lidos are open to Summer Card holders, so confirm the card status at booking.

Evite se you plan to catch early trains or eat out in town every night. The center fits better.

3. Schüttdorf and Seespitz

Best for
Families, long stays

Schüttdorf and Seespitz lie at the southern edge of the lake. The tourism board names a lido at Schüttdorf-Seespitz as one of the three on Lake Zell and lists tennis courts at Schüttdorf, which makes the area a natural fit for families and active groups. The ground is flat, so cycling to the center and along the lake is easy, and many properties are apartments or guesthouses with room for a group.

This base suits stays of a week or more, when a kitchen, a balcony and space matter more than a restaurant at the door. It also suits travelers with a car, because it sits close to the main roads and is an easy start for Kaprun or the Grossglockner road. Without a car, the bus and a bike do the work.

The downside is distance from the center in the evening. You will plan around the last bus or a taxi, and a spontaneous dinner out is less casual. The rooms are usually better value than lakefront ones in the center, but check whether the property is a Summer Card partner, since the card is what turns a mid-range stay into a lift-and-lido package.

Evite se you want restaurants and the promenade within a short stroll. The center fits better.

A good pick for bike rides, with the Schüttdorf centre just 0.5 km away

4. Kaprun

Best for
Glacier and lift days
Station
Bus or local rail

Short bus or train ride

Kaprun is the valley village below the Kitzsteinhorn, and it is the base to choose when the glacier is the point. The tourism board lists the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the Maiskogel family mountain, the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs and the Sigmund Thun Gorge among the village's attractions, and the Gipfelwelt 3000 sits at 3,029 meters on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Staying here removes the transfer from the lake to the lifts and gives you earlier starts, which matters on clear mornings when cloud can build later in the day.

Kaprun is less of a lake base. A swim means a bus ride to Zell am See, and evenings are village evenings, with a smaller choice of restaurants. In winter the equation flips, because the glacier and the ski area bring most of the guests. Check the tax: the tourism site lists Kaprun's local tax at €2 per person per night from age 15, rising to €3.50 from 1 November 2026, so a winter stay costs more per night than a summer one.

Kaprun suits travelers who plan several lift days and a visit to the reservoirs, and who do not need a town atmosphere. Combined with a night or two in Zell am See, it also works as the second half of a split stay.

Evite se you want a promenade, a lido and a station at the door. Zell am See center fits better.

Choose Kaprun when several lift days and the reservoirs matter more than town life.

Why the Summer Card changes the choice

Between 15 May and 31 October, the Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card is included with the stay at participating accommodations from the first night. The tourism site is explicit that it cannot be bought and is available only at partner accommodations. Premium partners listed on the site include the Kitzsteinhorn (without the 3K K-onnection), the Schmittenhöhe, the Maiskogel, the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs, a boat trip on Lake Zell, the lidos and the indoor pool in Zell am See. That is the lift bill for most of a summer week, which is why the card status of a hotel can matter more than its star rating.

The card is financed by a per-person, per-night contribution. In 2026 the tourism site lists adults and youths from age 15 at €9.28 in the pre-season (15 May to 15 July), €10.44 in the high season (15 July to 15 September), €9.28 from 15 September to 15 October and €7.06 from 15 to 31 October, with lower amounts for children and nothing for children up to five. Check the booking terms for how the contribution appears on your bill. The cards compared page sets the card against the Hike & Swim Ticket and the SalzburgerLand Card for travelers whose hotel is not a partner.

Peak weeks carry limits. From 15 July to 15 September the card is valid from 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and the Schmittenhöhe lift, the Gletscherjet 3+4 on the Kitzsteinhorn, the round trip on the MS Schmittenhöhe (one use per day) and the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs work only from the second day of the stay. A one-night stay in high summer therefore gets much less from the card than a three-night one.

Choosing by length of stay

A single night is a transit stop, so sleep near the station in the center and skip the lifts. Two to three nights belong in the center for a first trip, with one lift day and one lake day. Four to seven nights are where a split pays off: two nights in the center, then two or three in Kaprun for the glacier and the reservoirs, or the reverse if the lake is the second act. A week or more suits an apartment in Schüttdorf or Thumersbach, where a kitchen and a balcony replace the hotel buffet.

Moving between the bases costs little, because the Guest Mobility Ticket lets overnight guests use public transport across the state of Salzburg, and buses and the Pinzgau local railway serve Kaprun and other towns around the lake. That makes a split practical even for a short trip, as long as the second base has a bus stop nearby.

Local tax and what the nightly rate includes

Hotels add local taxes to the room price, and they are easy to miss when comparing totals. The tourism site lists a local tax of €2 per person per night for guests aged 15 and over in Zell am See, and the same in Kaprun until the end of October 2026, when Kaprun's rate rises to €3.50 per night on 1 November 2026 and to €4 from 1 November 2027. A mobility tax of €0.50 per person per night applies to guests aged 15 and over, rising to €1.10 per person from 1 May 2027, and it pays for the Guest Mobility Ticket. Children under 15 are exempt from the local tax. The accommodation provider collects both. For a broader view of how European towns charge these, see tourist taxes in Europe.

The practical point: compare the final price for your dates, not the headline rate. A family of four with two children under 15 pays tax for two adults only, while a group of four adults on a six-night stay pays a visible sum on top. If a partner hotel's rate looks higher than a non-partner one, the difference may be the Summer Card, and the lift savings can cancel it out.

Getting to your base

Zell am See is on the rail map, and the station is in the town center. The tourism board lists direct trains from Vienna: Westbahn runs three times a day from Vienna Westbahnhof via St. Pölten, Linz and Salzburg, and ÖBB offers direct Vienna services on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. From Salzburg airport and main station, bus 260 runs to Zell am See. By car, the board gives about 1.5 hours from Salzburg and about 2.5 hours from Munich; drivers should read the toll rules in the Austria guide first.

A large body of water surrounded by mountains, Zell am See

Salzburg Airport is about 80 kilometers away, Innsbruck about 150 and Munich about 200. If you arrive from outside the EU, read EES explained first, because the registration step at the first Schengen border adds time. Plan transfers with slack on the first day, especially if a Summer Card partner hotel has a set check-in window.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is assuming every hotel includes the Summer Card. The card is a partner feature, so ask before you book and again at check-in. The second is booking one night in high summer and expecting the full card benefit, given the 3 p.m. rule on arrival day and the day-two rule for four attractions. The third is choosing Kaprun for a lake holiday: the lake is a bus ride away. The fourth is skipping the local tax in your budget, especially in Kaprun after 1 November 2026. The last is booking Thumersbach or Schüttdorf without checking how you will reach the station on departure day.

Booking tips and timing

Book early for July and August and for school holiday weeks, when the lake town fills and the best-placed rooms go first. Event weekends can close roads and raise prices, so check the tourism site's event calendar for your dates. If your dates are flexible, late May, June and September give open lifts and lidos with more choice. For the high road and the park, see Hohe Tauern National Park before you plan the day.

Two small purchases come before the trip itself. Lift status, bus times and Summer Card codes all live on a phone, so an eSIM for Austria saves hunting for a roaming setting at the station, and travel insurance is the safety net for a cancelled flight or an injury on a trail. When the base is booked, Zell am See in 3 days turns it into a plan.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the best area to stay in Zell am See?

Zell am See gives you a train station, a lake and a town evening. Kaprun gives you the glacier and reservoir lifts at the door and a village feel, but a lake swim means a bus ride.

Does every hotel in Zell am See include the Summer Card?

No. The Summer Card is issued only by partner accommodations between 15 May and 31 October, and it cannot be bought. Check the partner list on the tourism site or ask the hotel before you book.

Do you need a car if you stay in Zell am See?

Not for the town, the lake or the main lifts. The station is in the center, bus 260 links Salzburg airport, and overnight guests receive a Guest Mobility Ticket for regional transport. A car helps mostly for the Grossglockner road.

What taxes do hotels add in Zell am See and Kaprun?

The tourism site lists a local tax of €2 per person per night from age 15 in both places, and €0.50 per night for mobility. Kaprun's local tax rises to €3.50 from 1 November 2026.
