At Makartplatz 8, opposite the opera and close to Mirabell Gardens, the Mozart Residence is the house museum where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived with his family from 1773 to 1781. The exhibition covers the family’s life and Mozart’s years in Salzburg through portraits, documents and instruments, including his pianoforte and a violin. It is smaller in scope than the composer’s birthplace across the river, but gives a closer look at his later Salzburg years and the rooms where the family lived.

Mozart Residence

The Mozart family moved to the Dance Master’s House on Makartplatz in 1773, when their earlier rooms had become too small for social gatherings. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived here until 1781, when he left Salzburg for Vienna. The apartment on the first floor is now a museum devoted to the family and Mozart’s life and work as a young adult and adult.

The house is also known as the Tanzmeisterhaus. It was partially destroyed during an air raid in the Second World War, then reconstructed. The museum opened to the public in 1996.
