Hauptplatz is the main square of Linz's old town, laid out in the 13th century and lined with baroque buildings. It is one of the largest enclosed squares in Austria, at about 13,200 square metres. The Holy Trinity Column rises at its centre, a 20 metre white marble column finished in 1723. Cafes and restaurants line the square, and it is busiest on weekends, in summer and at Christmas.
From the 13th century to today

The square was laid out in the 13th century and forms the centre of the old town. The buildings around it are mostly baroque in style, and they close in the square on all sides.
The square sits at the northern end of Landstraße, the historic boulevard of Linz. Walking the boulevard brings you to the square, which is a natural first stop for a walk through the old town.
The Holy Trinity Column

The column in the centre is dedicated to the Trinity. It is made of white marble, stands 20 metres high, and was completed in 1723.
It was erected out of gratitude for disasters the city had survived, and as protection against fire, war and plague. Treat it as a memorial and give it room, as people come here to look at it and to pause.
It is often called the plague column, and it is one of the first things visitors notice on the square.
Buildings and places to eat
The Old Town Hall is one of the most impressive buildings on the square. The baroque facades are best seen by walking slowly around the edges.
The cafes and restaurants on the square have a good atmosphere, and several serve beer. Many have terraces in summer, so you can sit outside and watch the square while you eat.
Markets and events through the year
On weekends a flea market sets up on the square, and local produce from the surrounding area is sold. Honey and apricot products from the region are among the things you can buy.
In winter the Christmas market fills the square, with local food, homemade crafts and work by local artisans. Cultural events of the city also take place here throughout the year.
Planning your visit
The square is open 24 hours, so you can walk through at any time of day. The entrance, the restroom and the car park are all wheelchair accessible.
A visit to the square itself takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Add time for a meal or coffee, or for a walk along Landstraße.
