Parramatta Square is a public space and dining precinct beside Parramatta’s train station, with contemporary buildings, places to sit and restaurants ranging from casual meals to fine dining. Stop for food, then look for the large sculptures Place of the Eels and Where Eels Lie Down, which refer to the area’s history. PHIVE, the nearby community and cultural hub, has a library, art and family spaces. The square also puts you close to Parramatta Library, the town hall and the river, making it a useful meeting point before exploring the city centre.

Two large sculptures in Parramatta Square draw on the area’s history. Place of the Eels is by Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro; Where Eels Lie Down is by Reko Rennie. Look for both as you move through the open space between the buildings.

Art continues inside nearby buildings. PHIVE has animated projections and murals, while the lobbies at 4, 6 and 8 Parramatta Square contain works by Michael Johnson, Chris Kenyon and Yaritji Young.

PHIVE and the library

Parramatta Square

PHIVE opened in 2023 as a community and cultural hub. Its library has 65,000 books, a dedicated children’s area and facilities for parents. The library is spread across two levels and has natural light, with spaces for children to read picture books and areas where visitors can sit.

Parramatta Library is also next to the square. The library is open on Sundays, so it can be part of a weekend visit.

Food and getting around

Restaurants and cafes around the square serve a range of cuisines, from casual meals to fine dining. Lilymu is one named restaurant in the precinct, with dishes inspired by China and Southeast Asia. More food options are across the road on Church Street.

The square is beside Parramatta train station and close to bus connections and light rail. Its restaurants can be hard to locate from within the square because there is no directory, so allow extra time to walk around and find a specific venue.
