Shark Beach sits within Nielsen Park on Sydney Harbour, in the Vaucluse area. Its netted swimming area gives you a sheltered place to swim, while the lawns and sand offer room to settle in beside the water. Harbour views and boats passing through the bay are part of the setting.

The park has showers and public toilets, including accessible facilities. Shaded picnic space comes from the large fig trees, but benches in the shade are limited. If you plan to stay for lunch, bring a blanket or something else to sit on. The foreshore path and steps facing the beach also give you places to pause and look out over the water.

Nielsen Park is a useful starting point for a walk along the harbour. The Hermitage Foreshore Track is a 3.6 km return route towards Watsons Bay, with views along the shoreline. The path connects the park to a longer stretch of foreshore, so you can make a short visit or continue walking beyond the beach.

A route towards Bottle and Glass Point is another option mentioned for exploring the area. Along the way, look for viewpoints above the beach and changing views across the harbour. The park’s paths also let you take a quieter break beneath the trees after time on the sand.

Greycliffe House and the park’s past

Nielsen Park is part of Sydney Harbour National Park and is heritage-listed. The grounds were once part of the Vaucluse House estate, which covered 206 hectares. Greycliffe House, a Gothic sandstone building completed in 1851, stands beneath the trees. It is not open to visitors, but you can see it from within the park.

The wider Sydney Harbour National Park includes places that once had roles in protecting Sydney from invasion and infectious disease. The area later became a recreational landscape. At Nielsen Park today, the focus is on the beach, picnic areas and walks along the harbour.
