Foundation Park

Foundation Park is a small historic site on Gloucester Walk in The Rocks, Sydney.

Foundation Park is a small historic site on Gloucester Walk in The Rocks, Sydney. Its steep grounds hold the remains of tiny terraced homes built between 1874 and 1878, offering a glimpse of the cramped housing conditions of the late 19th century. Recreated rooms and oversized metal furniture help convey how little space residents had. The park also has views towards the Harbour Bridge and city skyline, and a quiet corner for a pause. Access is by steps, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

The houses on the hillside

Foundation Park

Foundation Park occupies a small, steep patch of land in The Rocks. The remains here are from terraced homes built between 1874 and 1878. Each house stood on its own level of the slope and contained two small rooms, with a floor area of roughly nine square metres.

The buildings were fitted into whatever space was available. Their compact scale gives the site its particular historical interest: the layout makes clear how limited domestic space could be in this part of Sydney in the late 19th century.

Reconstructed rooms and oversized metal furniture give visitors a way to picture the dimensions of the homes. You can sit on the furniture to experience the rooms at closer range.

Foundation Park can be reached from Gloucester Walk or Playfair Street and fits into a walk between George Street and Bridge Steps. Susanna's Place and The Big Dig are nearby, with further connections to the history of The Rocks. The park is reached by steps and cannot be accessed by wheelchair.
