First Fleet Park is a small public green space on Sydney Cove, between the Museum of Contemporary Art and Circular Quay in The Rocks. From its grass and paved areas, you can look across the harbour towards the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, or pause for a picnic and watch the ferries. A bronze-and-terrazzo map marks the cove as it appeared in 1808. The park is named for the First Fleet’s arrival nearby in 1788, and its open space also hosts events and exhibitions during the year.

A waterfront shaped by many histories

The park takes its name from the First Fleet’s arrival in Sydney Cove in 1788. The western shore of Warrane had long been used by Gadigal people for fishing and canoe travel. After colonisation, authorities reorganised the waterfront around a public wharf and the settlement’s first marketplace, concentrating landing and trade in this area.

The harbour’s work continued to shape the shoreline. Isaac Nichols, who lived nearby, became the colony’s first postmaster in 1809 and distributed mail arriving by ship. Mary Reibey’s warehouse and shipping interests brought private commerce to the waterfront as well.

The 1808 map and the park’s later role

During Sydney’s Bicentenary, the park was remodelled around a bronze-and-terrazzo map of Sydney Cove as it appeared in 1808. The map represents the town that had grown around the wharf, market and shipping activity. It gives the small park a historical point of focus alongside its views across the water.

First Fleet Park also has a place in more recent local history. In 1973, residents and builders labourers gathered here before marching against redevelopment. Their green ban helped stop a high-rise proposal and redirect The Rocks towards conservation, consultation and lower-rise development.

Events and access

The park’s open grass and paved areas are used for events and exhibitions during the year, including Chinese New Year celebrations and the Bastille Festival. Christmas markets have also taken place here. The character of a visit can change when an event occupies the space, so check event details before setting out. An exhibition may require a ticket booked in advance.

The park is next to Circular Quay, where trains, light rail, buses and ferries connect. The Museum of Contemporary Art is also nearby. When no event is in progress, the park is a public place to pause by the harbour.
