Cenotaph

Sydney’s Cenotaph stands in Martin Place, a pedestrian area in the city centre.

Sydney’s Cenotaph stands in Martin Place, a pedestrian area in the city centre. Sculpted by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal and unveiled in 1929, the World War I memorial honours Australian service members who died in the conflict. A bronze soldier and sailor keep watch at either end of a granite tomb, with inscriptions on its north and south sides. Read them, or pause on a nearby bench. The site is central to Sydney’s ANZAC Day commemorations, including the dawn service.

The Cenotaph was commissioned to remember Australian soldiers and sailors who died in World War I. Sculptor Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal created the monument, which was unveiled on 21 February 1929.

Its design centres on a large granite tomb. At either end, a bronze soldier and sailor stand guard. The north face bears the words “Lest we forget”; the south carries a dedication to those who died. Reading both sides gives context to the memorial’s purpose.

Sydney’s ANZAC Day dawn service takes place at the Cenotaph on 25 April at 4:20 a.m. Wreaths are laid at the memorial, and attendees may wear service uniforms. Dress respectfully if you join the ceremony.

The memorial is also open to visit outside the annual service. Martin Place is a pedestrian area, with benches nearby. The station has takeaway food and toilets; Parliament House, Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are among the central Sydney landmarks in the surrounding area.
