St Kilda Pier

St Kilda Pier extends into Port Phillip Bay from Melbourne’s St Kilda foreshore, with views back to the beach and city skyline.

St Kilda Pier extends into Port Phillip Bay from Melbourne’s St Kilda foreshore, with views back to the beach and city skyline. Walk the broad pier for sea air, passing boats and a look at the heritage-listed kiosk at its end. Around dusk, the breakwater is a place to watch for little penguins returning to their nesting area. The penguin viewing area is designed to protect the colony, so keep your distance and follow any directions there. The waterfront walk is also popular for fishing and cycling.

Views across the bay

St Kilda Pier
St Kilda Pier

St Kilda Pier reaches from the foreshore out into Port Phillip Bay. The walk gives you views across the water and back towards Melbourne’s skyline, St Kilda Beach and the boats in the bay. The pier is used for strolling, cycling and fishing, and its wide walkways make it a straightforward waterfront stop.

The end of the pier is marked by the heritage-listed St Kilda Pier Kiosk. The kiosk dates to 1904 and has been rebuilt after a fire. It serves coffee and snacks, including fish and chips, pies and ice cream. Its position at the end of the walk makes it a place to pause before heading back.

Little penguins at the breakwater

St Kilda Pier
St Kilda Pier

A colony of little penguins lives around the breakwater. They are usually tucked away during the day and come ashore around twilight, so seeing them is not guaranteed. The penguin viewing area is set up beside their habitat, with measures intended to protect the birds.

Free entry to the penguin viewing experience requires an online reservation, and available places are limited. Check for a session around sunset before you go. Give the penguins space and avoid blocking spots where they rest.

Planning a pier walk

The pier is a place to visit at different points in the day: you can walk the waterfront, watch activity on the bay or stay for the changing light at sunset. On a clear evening, the west-facing pier looks out over the water as the sun goes down, while the city skyline is visible behind you.

There is paid parking nearby, including paid street parking. The exposed waterfront can be windy, so a windbreaker is useful. If penguin viewing is part of your plan, arrange the reservation separately from your general pier visit.
