You can also learn about the fort’s role in the First World War, including its part in stopping the S.S. Pfalz from leaving the port.

Built to defend Port Phillip Bay

Fort Queenscliff
Fort Queenscliff

Fort Queenscliff was built in 1860 on Shortlands Bluff to protect the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. It became the headquarters for a chain of forts around the heads, and its coastal-defence role continued until 1946. The site preserves more than 150 years of Australian military history.

The fort’s position overlooking the bay shaped its purpose. Its defences were designed to guard the port entrance, and its history connects local military infrastructure with events that reached beyond Queenscliff.

What the guided tour covers

Fort Queenscliff
Fort Queenscliff

Visitors enter the fort on a guided tour, which provides access to historic military areas and underground sections. The underground spaces include old working areas and magazines beneath the cliffs. Some parts of the site are not open to visitors, so the tour follows permitted routes through the active military installation.

The fort’s history includes its role at the start of the First World War. The fort fired one of the first shots of the war to stop the German merchant ship S.S. Pfalz from leaving Port Phillip. This episode gives context to the fort’s position at the bay entrance and its defensive purpose.

The museum and displays

The tour also includes the Fort Queenscliff Museum, with indoor and outdoor displays about the fort and the region’s military history. The collections include artefacts and historical material connected with coastal defence. Together, the fort’s structures and museum displays help explain how the site was built and used.

Fort Queenscliff remains an active Department of Defence site, so access is managed. Photography is not allowed in active areas; ask your guide where you may take pictures. Most of the tour area is wheelchair accessible, but contact staff when booking to discuss access needs.
