Art and city stories in City Hall

Museum of Brisbane
Museum of Brisbane

The Museum of Brisbane sits on Level 3 of Brisbane City Hall, a landmark building in the city centre. Its exhibitions connect Brisbane’s social history with contemporary art and culture. Historical displays have covered the city’s development from the 1880s through the 1900s, while other shows have explored subjects such as fashion, architecture and the lives of Brisbane residents.

The museum’s program changes, so the focus depends on what is currently on display. Past exhibitions have included First Nations art and textiles, local paintings, photographs, historic ceramics and multimedia presentations. Rather than relying only on old objects, the museum uses art and installations to tell stories about the city and its people.

Temporary exhibitions are a reason to check what is showing before your visit. Past projects have examined the influence of Bauhaus on Brisbane architecture, contemporary fashion and the city’s food culture. The museum has also presented work by Indigenous artists, including an exhibition centred on Dylan Mooney’s Blak Superheroes.

There are activities and programs for children, including hands-on art experiences. Talks, workshops and events are also part of the museum’s program. The mix of history, art and activities gives families and visitors with different interests more than one way to engage with Brisbane’s stories.

Tours and the museum shop

The City Hall clock tower tour is separate from the museum visit and is free. It takes visitors into the tower to see its inner workings and reach a viewing platform with city views. A separate free City Hall tour has also been described as lasting about 45 minutes. Book the clock tower tour ahead during busy periods, when available places can be limited.

The museum shop is near the entrance and stocks Brisbane-themed souvenirs and goods by local creatives, including contemporary jewellery, homewares and books. Free lockers are available for larger bags that cannot be brought into the museum.
