French architects Coulomb and Chauvet designed it in an eclectic style that blends Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine and Renaissance elements. Inside, look for marble, mosaics, carved wood, paintings and stained glass, along with individually decorated confessionals and a large altar. The church is also a quieter place for prayer and reflection than some nearby churches. Its French-made organ has 5,000 pipes.

Mercedes Castellanos de Anchorena, an influential member of Buenos Aires’s aristocracy, commissioned the basilica and donated it to the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. She owned Anchorena Palace, and the church was built across from the family’s home. French architects Coulomb and Chauvet designed the building. It was consecrated in 1916.

The basilica’s style combines Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine and Renaissance elements. Its white marble façade includes a representation of Blessed Pedro Eymard with two kneeling angels.
