Exhibits on Yosemite’s Indigenous history

Yosemite Museum

The Yosemite Museum interprets the cultural history of the valley’s Miwok and Paiute people. Its displays include handwoven baskets, traditional dress, tools and other objects, alongside historical photographs. Exhibits also address Native American life before the establishment of Yosemite National Park and the experiences of Indigenous people from 1850 to the present.

The collection gives visitors a way to learn about the people who lived in the valley before focusing on its later history as a park. Displays also cover early tourism, including the first motorcycle to make the trip to Yosemite. Historical objects and photographs provide context for how the valley changed as visitors began arriving.

Behind the museum, a short walk leads to the Indian Village of Ahwahnee. Recreated buildings show traditional and Gold Rush-era forms of habitation. Interpretive signs explain elements of village life and describe plants used for food and for making items such as arrows and baskets.

The village is an outdoor part of the visit, so allow time to walk around it rather than seeing only the indoor displays. Cultural demonstrators may also be present in the museum, sharing traditional skills and answering questions. Demonstrations mentioned for the museum include basket weaving, beadwork, stone-tool making and traditional games; availability can vary.

A museum built to fit its surroundings

The museum building was designed by National Park architect Herbert Maier and built in the 1920s. Its Rustic style uses local rock, logs and wooden shingles on the exterior, following the idea that park buildings should fit their surroundings. The museum is identified as the first museum built in the U.S. national park system.

Inside, exhibits extend beyond cultural history to the geology of Yosemite. A chronological approach begins with the formation of the valley and moves forward through its history, including the arrival of early American visitors by stagecoach. The combination of geological and cultural displays makes the museum a compact introduction to both the natural history of Yosemite and the people connected to the valley.
