Point Sublime is a trail and viewpoint on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, reached from Artist Point. The roughly 3-mile round trip follows the canyon edge, with colorful walls and the Yellowstone River far below. The views along the first half of the route can be more rewarding than the endpoint, where trees partly obscure the canyon. It is a quieter alternative to the busy Artist Point area, but the unprotected cliffs call for care throughout the walk.

The trail from Artist Point

Point Sublime

The route starts at Artist Point and heads east along the south rim, away from Upper and Lower Falls. It is about 3 miles out and back, with roughly 350 feet of total ascent. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the walk. The trail brings you past views of the colorful canyon walls and the river below, with fewer people than at the popular Artist Point viewpoint.

The first half is often the more scenic stretch. Some of the overlooks along the way give a clearer view than Point Sublime itself, where trees can partly block the canyon. You can turn around before reaching the endpoint if the views are your main reason for going.

Canyon-edge safety

Parts of the trail follow exposed cliffs without fences. Keep a safe distance from the edge, which can be unstable, and take extra care with children. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance toward the far end of the route, so be prepared for them if you plan to walk the full distance.
