Heurich House Museum, known as the Brewmaster’s Castle, is a historic mansion in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood.

Heurich House Museum, known as the Brewmaster’s Castle, is a historic mansion in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood. Built for German-American brewer Christian Heurich in 1892 to 1894, it preserves the family’s furnishings and detailed woodwork. A guided visit connects the house to the Heurich family, its brewery and Washington life of the period. Tours begin in the carriage house, beside a garden with seating and a beer garden where you can have local beer or wine. Reserve a tour before you go; nearby parking is limited.

Built for Christian Heurich

German-American brewer Christian Heurich had this Washington home built from 1892 to 1894. His brewery became the largest in the city, and the house connects that business story with the family’s domestic life. The museum also looks beyond the people who owned the mansion: its history includes household staff, brewery workers and the craftspeople who built it.

The building is a notable example of Richardsonian Romanesque residential architecture. Its concrete and metal construction made it an unusually fire-resistant home for its time. The original furnishings and interior details remain, giving the visit a close view of how the house was designed and lived in, rather than a display of rooms emptied of their contents.

The mansion incorporated electric lighting and burglar alarms, along with metal speaking tubes. It also had indoor plumbing and a central vacuum system. These details help explain why the house was considered technologically advanced when it was built. Look closely at the woodwork and the rooms’ decorative finishes; the craftsmanship is a central part of the visit.

The family’s belongings remain in the house, so the interiors tell a personal story as well as an architectural one. A newer exhibit, “Working Title,” brings attention to people who worked in the home or for the Heurich family. It adds their experiences to the history of the mansion, its owners and the brewery.

How the visit works

Tours are available by reservation from Thursday through Saturday. They begin in the carriage house at the rear of the garden, where visitors can learn about the brewery before entering the mansion. The guided tour covers the family, the house and brewing in Washington; allow about an hour for the tour itself.

The carriage house now includes the 1921 Biergarten. The garden has seating, including spots in shade and sun, as well as fire pits. Local craft beer and wine are available there, and German-themed festivals and public events take place at the site. The Christkindlmarkt is an annual holiday market. Event access and tour visits depend on reservations or the scheduled program, so check the museum’s current information when planning your visit.
