Patriots Point opened in 1976, with the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at its center. The museum sits at 40 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant, on Charleston Harbor, across the water from Charleston. Here, the historic vessel is part of the collection: visitors can move through the ship and see the spaces where sailors worked and lived.

The Yorktown served in World War II and later in the Vietnam War. It also recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule after their lunar orbit in 1968. Its long service gives the ship’s different areas a range of stories, from wartime operations to life aboard a carrier.

The Yorktown’s flight deck and hangar bay put its aircraft displays in context. Vintage planes and helicopters are displayed aboard the ship, while exhibits explain naval history and the people who served. The carrier’s crew quarters, bridge, engine rooms and combat information spaces show how much of daily work took place inside the vessel, away from the open deck.

A self-guided route leads through the ship, and marked paths help you follow the tour. The layout involves climbing ladders, ducking through doorways and moving through tight, low spaces. Take your time between decks, especially if you want to read the displays. The physical layout can be uncomfortable for visitors who find steep climbs or confined passages difficult.

Other ships and exhibits

The USS Laffey, a World War II destroyer, is another key part of the museum. During one engagement, it survived multiple kamikaze and bomb hits, then returned to service after repairs. The museum’s exhibits also include the Medal of Honor Museum aboard the Yorktown, which tells the stories of recipients from the Civil War through conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On land, the Vietnam Experience recreates a naval support base, with settings including a mess hall and fire-control bunker. It gives visitors a different perspective from the ship tours, with a walk-through exhibit focused on the Vietnam War. A Cold War memorial adds another part of the site’s military history. With ships, aircraft and indoor exhibits spread across the grounds, a short stop leaves little time to take in the displays.
