University of Washington

The University of Washington’s Seattle campus is a rewarding stop for its Gothic buildings, green lawns and views of Mount Rainier.

The University of Washington’s Seattle campus is a rewarding stop for its Gothic buildings, green lawns and views of Mount Rainier. Start at the Quad, where Yoshino cherry trees bloom in spring, then look in on Denny Hall, the campus’s oldest building, built in 1895. Suzzallo Library is another highlight, with a vaulted ceiling, carved oak bookcases and stained glass. The grounds are large, so choose a few sights or give yourself time for a longer walk. The Link light rail connects the campus with downtown Seattle.

The Quad and its cherry trees

The Liberal Arts Quadrangle, usually called the Quad, is one of the campus’s best-known outdoor spaces. Brick buildings surround its lawns and shaded paths. Yoshino cherry trees line the area, with pink and white blossoms appearing in spring. The flowering period is brief, and the Quad can draw large crowds during the bloom. An early visit gives you more room to walk and take in the trees.

The campus is pleasant to explore beyond blossom season, too. Its lawns, older buildings and paths make a walk between sights part of the visit. Mount Rainier is visible from campus when conditions allow.

Denny Hall, built in 1895, is the oldest building on campus. Its historic architecture offers a contrast with the university’s larger, active academic setting.

Suzzallo Library is known for its grand Reading Room and Graduate Reading Room. Inside, look for a 65-foot vaulted ceiling, carved oak bookcases, stained-glass windows and hanging metal light fixtures. The building’s appearance has earned it comparisons to a fictional school of magic, but its architectural details are reason enough to visit. Check access before making the library the focus of your trip, as campus buildings can have their own schedules.

Art, museums and getting around

The Henry Art Gallery is on campus and houses more than 25,000 works of art. The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture is another campus destination for visitors interested in science and culture. Choose one or both alongside a walk through the Quad and the historic buildings.

The University of Washington campus is in Seattle’s U-District, at 1410 NE Campus Parkway. The Link light rail provides a connection between the university area and downtown. Paid parking is available in campus lots and garages, as well as on some streets. Because the grounds cover a large area, plan a route around the places you most want to see.
